Botanic Name:
Rhamnus crocea
Common Name:
Red Berry
Size: 5'h x 5'w
Sun: sun-pt. shd
H20: occ.H2O/dry
Description:
This adaptable shrub is found around the Bay Area in dry habitats ranging from full sun on baking hot south-facing slopes to full shade under oaks and bays. Regardless of how much sun or shade it is given it remains a neat, dense 5 by 5 foot shrub with small evergreen leaves. Fruiting is unpredictable, but when it occurs, it is spectacular with hundreds of pea-sized cherry red berries adorning the plant in late summer (which birds love). Will take clay or rocky soils, but should not be given much water. A slow grower to begin with, but worth the wait.
