Following is a list of native trees and shrubs considered resistant to Armillarea mellea, Oak Root Fungus. Smaller perennials do not appear to be affected by this fungus. It should be noted that this fungus is a natural, native component of much of the soil in California, with a very diverse flora thriving alongside it. When this organism becomes a problem in a garden setting, it is typically related to a heavy watering regimen, which is unnecessary for most natives, and acts as a strong ‘fertilizer’ for fungal growth, particularly in hot weather. Gardeners struggling with problems related to Oak Root Fungus should examine their watering schedules, and water the minimum amount necessary. Doing so should limit fungal growth to an extent that many less resistant plants will still thrive.
